Things are moving fast and furious when it comes to the roster retention of Michigan basketball interim head coach Mike Boynton.

So far, the former Oklahoma State head coach, who was named as the interim head coach after Dusty May left for the Dallas Mavericks, has retained nine players, including all five projected starters. Brandon McCoy was the latest of that group to confirm his return.

The 5-star signee followed the retentions of Elliot Cadeau, Trey McKenney, Moustapha Thiam, J.P. Estrella, Jalen Reed, Joseph Hartman, and Lincoln Cosby

There are still three players out there that could play real minutes next season for Boynton, assuming he is the coach for the 2026-27 season, and here they are.

L.J. Cason

Cason hasn't announced what he's going to do next season. He's recovering from an ACL injury, but before he left, May said he expected Cason to play in 2026-27 if the 5-for-5 passed, which it did.

Cason was lights out last season in Big Ten play before getting injured. He averaged 8.8 points per game, 2.2 assists, and just under one steal per game. He also shot 44.6 percent from 3-point range.

Cason was also really tight with Dusty May, so who knows?

Quinn Costello

The 6-foot-10 freshman is ranked No. 32 overall, according to the 247 Sports composite rankings. Michigan's 2026 class featured four top-100 signees. Costello is the only one who hasn't committed to a return, or at least it hasn't been reported.

Costello is the definition of a stretch four. He's one of the best 3-point shooters in the 2027 class and should see some significant minutes next season. The McDonald's All-American is expected to play for the Wolverines next season, but you never know until it's public.

Oscar Goodman

There have been rumors about a departure or two. It feels like Goodman is one of the names to watch. The 6-foot-7 forward redshirted in 2024-25, then played 5.4 minutes per game in 16 games during the Wolverines' national championship season.

With the void at the three, Goodman could be valuable, especially since Jalen Reed only played six games last season for LSU. Goodman shot 41.7 percent from the field, and was 0-for-6 from 3-point range in limited action.

If anyone was poised to play for someone else, it might be Goodman. He might feel like a luxury, now, but it feels like he could easily play solid minutes for a Power-4 program, even a contender.

So it will be interesting to see if Boynton can lock him up, along with the handful of Michigan basketball players, who haven't said one way or another what they are going to do.
