You have to protect your borders. That is what Kyle Whittingham is being asked to do since taking over at Michigan. While there are still plenty of big changes on the horizon for the Wolverines, making sure the best players in-state end up playing in Ann Arbor remains a paramount endeavor. It is why Whittingham and his new Michigan staff has to hone in on four-star wide receiver Dakota Guerrant.

Alleen Trieu of 247Sports shared Michigan will be one of the five places Guerrant will visit this spring.

Guerrant is also visiting Ohio State and Oregon in Big Ten country, as well as Miami and Texas A&M in the southeastern footprint. According to the 247Sports Composite, the Harper Woods native is the No. 1 player from Michigan in this recruiting class, the No. 8 wide receiver in the nation, and the No. 49 overall prospect in the 2027 recruiting cycle. To say Guerrant is coveted would be an understatement.

Being able to land Guerrant out of Harper Woods would be such a massive boost for Whittingham.

Michigan will get a spring visit out of four-star receiver Dakota Guerrant

To be fair, to not have Michigan among the quintet of teams to get a spring visit out of Guerrant would have been devastating. While securing Guerrant's four-star commitment could serve as a major tone-setter for Whittingham's early days in Ann Arbor, the same could be said if he does not. Truth be told, it is so crucial to have him here for a visit because of the overall optics of it. What if he did not come?

Whittingham may be a known commodity in the college football world, but he has spent the last quarter century working in Utah. Yes, players like Guerrant are surely well-aware of who Whittingham is and what he brings to the table as a head coach. However, recruting in-state as the face of the Michigan football program is another beast. There will be early slip-ups along the way, but not here...

When it comes to Michigan getting Guerrant's four-star commitment for 2027, we are still very early in the process. What is important here is to not be crossed off entirely just yet. If Guerrant really likes what Miami and Texas A&M have to offer, then it is far less punitive to see him go to either school than it would be for him to commit to Ohio State or Oregon in-conference. Whittingham cannot have that...

For now, let's hope Michigan puts its best foot forward when it comes to landing this top prospect.
