Michigan football head coach Sherrone Moore teased some good news on Monday night, with his post on social media, and Matt Ludwig, the four-star tight end, paid it off with his commitment to the Wolverines on Tuesday.
The 6-foot-4, 230-pound tight end announced his commitment after tight end coach Steve Casula made a second trip by the staff out to Billings, Montana, in the past few months.
It was enough, as Ludwig, who is ranked 175th overall in the 2026 class according to the On3 Industry rankings, as well as 10th among tight ends, announced his pledge on social media. He's a consensus four-star recruit and is ranked among the top 100 in the On3 rankings for the 2026 class.
Michigan football lands a freaky tight end from Montana
Ludwig is a three-sport athlete with rare athleticism for the position. He plays quarterback at times for Billings West, and even had a 100-yard game rushing as a wildcat quarterback, in addition to running an 11.12 in the 100-meter dash this spring.
For reference, Colston Loveland, who was just drafted in the first round by the Chicago Bears, ran a 12.54 in the same year (junior). He's got 361 rushing yards (5.9 per attempt) and six touchdowns, which isn't something you normally see with a tight end.
As a receiver, Ludwig has 89 receptions for 1,263 yards, which includes 880 yards as a junior. The Wolverines beat out a number of elite programs to win his commitment, too.
Texas Tech was one of the finalists, but Notre Dame and Georgia were also expected to get official visits. Tennessee was one of the top contenders, too.
Michigan football beat out them all. It probably has to do with Loveland's development, along with other tight ends who have been drafted by the Wolverines. Ludwig will also get to play alongside Bryce Underwood, so all in all, you can see why he made the decision that he did.
