Michigan football just had a tight end from Idaho drafted in the top 10 of the 2025 NFL draft -- Colston Loveland-- but the next first-round tight end might have just been projected to commit to the Wolverines.
Matt Ludwig, a 6-foot-4.5, 240-pound tight end who is ranked in the top 100 overall according to the On3 rankings, has been projected by another recruiting expert to land with the Michigan Wolverines. He's also ranked 167th overall in the On3 Industry rankings (10th among tight ends).
Not many blue-chip recruits have come out of Montana. Yet, there haven't been that many from Idaho either. Loveland was a stud. He was ranked similar to Ludwig. They also have a similar build and skillset.
Ludwig is a three-spot athlete. Not only does he star on the football field for Billings West, even playing wildcat quarterback at times. He's also a standout on the basketball court and in track. Ludwig also ran an 11.23 in the 100-meter dash this spring.
For the record, Loveland ran a 12.54 as a junior, which is the same year Ludwig is right now. Over the past two seasons, Ludwig caught 89 passes for 1,263 yards (822 as a junior). He's also got nine touchdown receptions, six rushing touchdowns, and a 100-yard rushing game, plus a game with 194 receiving yards.
Ludwig visited Michigan football recently. He's visited multiple times now. Ethan McDowell, a recruiting reporter for The Wolverine.com, just paid a visit Ludwig a visit to Ludwig.
Soon after, he put in a projection for Ludwig to commit to the Wolverines, joining Steve Wiltfong of On3.com, as well as EJ Holland of The Wolverine.
Michigan has a 91-percent chance of landing Ludwig's commitment, according to the On3 recruiting prediction machine. The elite tight end has official visits scheduled to U-M, Georgia, Texas A&M, Notre Dame, and Texas Tech.
That's some elite competition for an elite prospect. However, with the culture and the development of tight ends, Loveland included, Michigan feels like a perfect fit. A decision is expected this summer, and hopefully, the Wolverines can turn this momentum into a commitment.
