Michigan football just landed an elite talent from the state of Ohio in the 2027 recruiting class, thanks to the commitment of four-star cornerback Monsanna Torbert.
That was a head-to-head win over the Buckeyes, a rarity on the recruiting trail, especially in the state of Ohio. However, it looks like the Wolverines have their sights set on getting more talent from the Buckeye State, as they are making progress with four-star EDGE Asa Burch.
The 6-foot-5, 225-pound pass rusher out of Warren, Ohio, is ranked No. 129 overall in the 2028 recruiting class, according to the 247 Sports composite rankings. Ohio State offered. So have Michigan, Penn State, Indiana, and others. Burch will have no shortage of suitors after a 42-tackle season as a sophomore that included four sacks.
According to Brice Marich of The Michigan Insider, Burch is expected to visit for a game this fall, the Oklahoma game, which will follow a trip made this spring. The blue-chip EDGE visited Ohio State once in the spring and again in the summer. He's visited Ann Arbor three times. Penn State has also had him on campus three times. Notre Dame is in the mix, too.
This will be a hotly contested recruitment, but with the legacy tie to Michigan football, Kyle Whittinngham should have the inside track of landing the highly-touted recruit. The Wolverines are in a good spot with another 2028 EDGE, from Whittingham's old stomping grounds.
Key in-state target also set for key visit
LaMarcus Army, a four-star cornerback who stands 6-foot-1, 167 pounds out of Detroit Cass Tech, has also scheduled a Gameday visit this fall, according to Marich. The Wolverines offered back in February. Oregon and Nebraska are some of the other programs in the mix.
Ranked No. 224 overall in the 2028 class, according to the 247 Sports composite rankings, Army visited Michigan football back in March. When he was offered, he told Rivals that "it meant everything."
Getting him back on campus for the Oklahoma game this fall is another step in the right direction. Army is ranked as the sixth-best recruit in Michigan for the 2028 class. Burch is the fifth-best recruit in Ohio for the 2028 class, so in terms of Midwest recruiting, the Wolverines are off to a solid start.
Michigan was behind the 8-ball in 2027 after Whittingham was hired so late, and still, the class is ranked 11th in the 247 Sports composite rankings. That bodes well for 2028.
