Michigan basketball will have a new starting point guard for the 2025-26 season as Tre Donaldson, the starter for the Wolverines this past season, will enter the transfer portal.
It's not a huge shock, especially after the Wolverines added Elliot Cadeau, the former North Carolina guard, from the transfer portal on Monday.
Dusty May has played multiple guards together before, but Cadeau is a ball-dominant guard. Donaldson could have played more off the ball, but as I wrote on Monday, a 68-game starter, and former five-star in Cadeau isn't coming to Michigan basketball to come off the bench.
It's a bummer to see Tre leave, especially after some of the clutch moments he had down the stretch. Michigan basketball fans will never forget his buzzer-beater against Maryland that helped the Wolverines win the Big Ten tournament championship, or the clutch 3-pointers he made against Wisconsin in the Big Ten title game, or the go-ahead three late against UC San Diego.
Yet, it's hard to argue that Michigan basketball needed more of a play-making point guard. Donaldson struggled in the last two games, scoring just 13 points with four assists and five turnovers.
Tre did knock down 63 3-pointers this past season for Michigan basketball. He also shot 37 percent and had 151 assists compared to 81 turnovers. It feels like the Wolverines could have made it work, but it takes two to tango.
We don't know how those conversations went, but on Instagram, shortly after it was reported that he was leaving, Donaldson posted a heartbroken emoji.

That probably tells us all we need to know.
