A few days ago, four-star tight end Matt Ludwig announced his commitment to join the Michigan football program. The blue-chip tight end from Montana has chosen the Wolverines over a number of other big-name schools, with the likes of Texas Tech, Georgia, and Notre Dame being amongst the many schools in the running.
Standing at 6’4” and weighing in at around 240 pounds, Ludwig’s frame is only slightly smaller than Patriots legend Rob Gronkowski, who clocked in at 6-6 265 pounds during his playing days. As a tight end in his Junior year of high school, Ludwig finished the season with 53 receptions for 822 yards, 15.5 yards a catch, and four touchdowns.
What Matt Ludwig brings to Michigan Wolverines
Ludwig attends high school at Billings West in Billings, Montana. Along with playing football, he has participated in wrestling, basketball, and track and field. Though he’ll most likely play tight end for the Wolverines, he plays outside linebacker on defense, and is a prominent part of the special teams return unit.
The Michigan Wolverines usually employ a run-heavy scheme and commonly run two tight ends, meaning that Ludwig’s size and strength will fit very easily into their playbook. Being a hybrid tight end will have its advantages when they opt for the play-action pass or if the quarterback needs a short checkdown completion, if the defense gets to him quickly.
With Colston Loveland going to the Chicago Bears, Michigan desperately needs someone to fill his shoes, and Matt Ludwig might be the next best thing. Since he’s already committed to the Wolverines, fans are eager to see if he molds his game even more to complement their play style.
