Kyle Whittingham has already put together an impressive coaching staff for Michigan football, but the off-field staff is looking pretty darn good, too.

Whittingham, who hired a proven general manager, and also stole away a recruiting asset from USC, has made another stellar hire, bringing on former Michigan football player and assistant coach, Ron Bellamy to be the director of player personnel.

This is according to a report from Tony Garcia of the Detroit Free Press.

Ron Bellmy is a genius hire for Michigan football's in-state recruiting

Bellamy was formerly the wide receivers coach for the Wolverines. He was hired by Jim Harbaugh ahead of the 2021 season to coach the safety position, before moving over to coach wide receiver. Last season, he was the offensive pass-game coordinator for Michigan football.

Bellamy wasn't retained by Whittingham this offseason. That caused some stress among fans because he was crucial in landing Andrew Marsh, and some others in the 2026 recruiting class.

One thing that Whittingham is missing on the current staff is an in-state recruiting presence. There wasn't a single position coach retained after Lou Esposito left for the Ravens. There are coaches with ties to the Midwest like Kerry Coombs and Jim Harding, but adding Bellamy, a former high school head coach from Michigan, was genius.

Say what you will about Bellamy on the field, he did a great job on the recruiting trail in the 2025 and 2026 recruiting classes. He will also be great in this role, especially helping Michigan build relationships in the Detroit area. It will be important to keep a strong presence there. Adding Bellamy to the staff will go a long way.

Michigan football is a national program. It can get players from anywhere. But, there is a ton of talent in Michigan, even more than there used to be.

The best players in Michigan are supposed to play for Michigan. This move will make sure that keeps happening under Kyle Whittingham.
