There are a lot of things for Michigan football fans to like about Kyle Whittingham's first recruiting class.
For starters, 12 of the 16 commitments for Michigan right now are ranked as blue-chip recruits, according to the 247 Sports composite rankings.
Those same composite rankings have Michigan's 2027 recruiting class ranked among the top 10. The Wolverines are ranked 20th overall, via the 247 Sports specific rankings for the 2027 class, not the composite, but regardless, this class is trending up recently.
Huge rankings update for Michigan football commitment
One of the players who helped take Michigan's recruiting momentum to the next level, early during this now three-month stretch of recruiting success, was Jakari Lipsey.
The four-star offensive tackle who is listed at 6-foot-5, 290 pounds, received a huge rankings boost from 247 Sports on Thursday, moving up to the No. 36 overall prospect in the 2027 class. That moved his ranking up in the 247 Sports composite rankings, too, up to No. 105 overall.
His new ranking from 247 Sports has Lipsey, one of the prized commitments for new O-line coach Jim Harding, listed as second among recruits in Michiigan, as well as fourth among offensive tackles.
Talk about home runs.
Michigan football has always been dominant in the trenches when it has been successful. Kyle Whittingham believes you win in the trenches, just like Jim Harbaugh.
That makes him the perfect head coach for Michigan, and Lipsey the perfect recruit to be part of his first class at U-M. It's not just about his position either it's the way he plays it.
The 247 Sports scouting report describes Lipsey as a "mauler." He's known for finishing blocks to the turf, and his drive blocking ability is also highlighted. All of those traits should be music to the ears of Michigan football fans.
Lipsey threw over 54 feet in the shot put and 172 feet in the discus. It feels there is more room for him to grow this season as a player. His aggressive nature makes him sound like more of a guard, or maybe even a right tackle.
Either way, Michigan added a quality piece to the offensive line that has all the making of a future starter, and someone who should end up in the top 100 overall in the 2027 class.
That's just another reason to feel good about this Michigan football recruiting clas.
