There were some legitimate questions about Michigan football heading into the 2025 season, but before the start of fall camp, quarterback was chief among them.

Michigan football took a big step toward answering that question with the signing of Bryce Underwood in the 2025 recruiting class.

Yet, it was still hard to know if the true freshman would be ready to start. With just more than a week before the first game against New Mexico, that question has been answered in the affirmative.

Bryce Underwood has met the hype in fall camp for Michigan

The Big Ten Network crew was in Ann Arbor on Friday on their fall camp tour. Michigan was the last stop, so access was limited. Yet, the final verdict on Underwood was the same as it has been from everyone else who has seen him.

Even Urban Meyer said, after breaking down his film, that he has "all you want" in a quarterback. Dave Revsine of the Big Ten Network said he "loved" watching Underwood. He said that Bryce was "comfortable and confident", also that he can "make every throw."

That jives with what every other observer has said. Revsine also had good things to say about Underwood's No. 1 wideout, Donaven McCulley. The offensive line needed to improve, and it has, but the running backs will be elite, and if Underwood can be better than expected, as in more than just a game manager type, this team could be dangerous.

We saw Dylan Raiola play last season for Nebraska as a true freshman. He had 13 touchdown passes last season compared to 11 intercepions. He completed 67 percent of his passes, but also wasn't a runner.

Could Underwood's impact be similar or exceed that? The running dynamic adds a different element to the offense. It should help convert third downs and also in the red zone.

So it's not unrealistic to expect Underwood to perform at the same level. Frankly, he's a more talented player, so there's no reason not to expect him to have a better statistical season. After rooming with Max Bredeson, Underwood has been ingrained in the culture to the point that there have been as many positive things said about his intangibles as there have been about his arm talent.

Underwood hasn't been named the starter yet, but that's going to happen on Monday. And so far, by all indications, a great Michigan football career will start against New Mexico.

We can't say for sure that Underwood will be the next great Michigan football quarterback, but so far, Underwood has checked every single box.
