Michigan basketball head coach Dusty May is one of the hottest coaching candidates in the sport right now, which is once again extending to the NBA.

There were rumors about May being connected to the Golden State Warriors and the Orlando Magic this offseason, but neither gained traction. Those teams could have been interested, but there was never any interest on May's side of things.

According to Marc Stein, a long-time NBA insider, the Wolverines head coach is now going to be a target of the Dallas Mavericks, who are searching for a new head coach after Jason Kidd was fired.

More rumors about Dusty May and the NBA

Dallas won just 26 games this season; however, the Mavs have Cooper Flagg, the No. 1 overall pick from the 2025 NBA draft, who won the NBA's Rookie of the Year award. Dallas has something to build around, which could be attractive to someone looking to make the jump from college.

It's hard to see May taking the leap at this point. Duke's Jon Scheyer is also expected to be a target of the Mavs. With his connections to Flagg, there seems to be a better chance there for Dallas, although both coaches are likely staying in college.

Michigan basketball just won the national championship after a 37-3 season. The Wolverines are expected to have three players selected in the first round of the NBA draft, maybe even the lottery, which is another reason NBA teams probably have interest in May. He knows how to develop players.

If May does leave Michigan, it would likely be for an NBA team. That time isn't now, though. You can never say never about anything, yet May seems focused on getting to the 2027 Final Four in Detroit, and having a chance to defend the Wolverines first national championship in 37 years.
