Michigan football landed its 19th commitment in the 2027 recruiting class on Thursday. The Wolveriners might not have to wait long for No. 20.
Four-star linebacker Frederrick Ford committed on Thursday, giving the Wolverines a much-needed blue-chip linebacker. Ford is out of Greenwood, Mississippi. Ole Miss, Mississippi State, Florida State, and Tennessee were among the contenders.
It was a nice recruiting win for Michigan football head coach Kyle Whittingham, who has now landed two recruits from Mississippi in the 2027 class. But if the Wolverines want to land another commitment on Friday, they will need to get the best of Tennessee once again.
Tennesee, Michigan battling it out for four-star defensive back Marcus Jones
Marcus Jones, a four-star defensive back, who took an official visit to Michigan football during Victors Weekend, will announce his commitment on Friday via his Instagram account. Michigan, Tennessee, North Carolina, and Ole Miss are the finalists.
Michigan football has built some momentum with Jones in recent weeks. However, his official visit was his first trip to Ann Arbor. Ranked No. 242 overall in the 247 Sports composite rankings, out of Haverford, Pennsylvania, Jones would give the Wolverines another pledge at safety to go along with three-star Charles Woodson Jr.
Michigan has three cornerbacks committed, although Tavarres Harrington strikes me as a possible nickel. So adding another safety, along with four-star Monsanna Torbert, who Michigan is trying to land over Ohio State, would be a nice way to close out the secondary group in 2027.
There haven't been any crystal ball projections for Jones ahead of his commitment announcement. The only expert projection that has been logged with the Rivals Recruiting Prediction Machine was from Steve Wiltfong back on June 16th for Tennessee, before Jones even visited Ann Arbor.
Still, the prediction gives the Vols a 93% chance of landing Jones' commitment. It should be noted that his official visit to Knoxville was his only trip to Tennessee, so Michigan and Tennessee are on par in that regard. Jones visited Ole Miss once this spring, and again on an official visit.
Michigan's 2027 recruiting class is currently ranked 10th via the 247 Sports Composite team rankings, thanks to 19 commitments. 14 of those commitments are blue-chip prospects. Adding Jones would give the Wolverines a 15th blue-chip, with Lincoln Mageo and Torbert still out there.
Some other 2027 targets started trending the other direction, but Jones is higher on the board, and if the Wolverines can land him, that would be another impressive recruiting win for Whittingham.
