4-star 2028 RB could join Monsanna Tobert Jr. as Michigan’s latest Ohio convert

The Wolverines have suddenly begun stealing talent from the Buckeye state.

Kyle Whittingham has really packed a recruiting punch in his first year with the Wolverines. Not only has Whittingham built a Top 10 2027 recruiting class, but he did so without a single five-star recruit and has excelled with out-of-state recruiting.

Whittingham has always been an elite recruiter; he just didn't have the resources at Utah. Now at Michigan, Whittingham has a massive war chest and is using it to his advantage. One of the biggest wins for Whittingham as of late was the commitment from four-star cornerback Monsanna Torbert Jr., an Ohio native who chose Michigan over Ohio State in a heated recruiting battle.

Now, Whittingham could be on the trail of bringing another Ohio native over the state lines to Michigan with 2028 four-star running back Cartae Ligon. The Chillicothe, Ohio native has reportedly already made a few trips to Ann Arbor, and is clearly loving everything the Wolverines have to offer.

"It just feels like home every time I go up there," Ligon said of his time in Ann Arbor.

Torbert isn't the only Ohio native to have found a home in Michigan. One of the only coaches to be retained by Whittingham from Sherrone Moore's staff is running backs coach Tony Alford, the Akron, Ohio native, who was once the running backs coach with Michigan's greatest rival, Ohio State. He made the switch two years ago to the Wolverines and hasn't looked back.

Alford has been one of the best recruiters for Michigan the past two years and is looking to keep that streak going. Alford was a big reason that Michigan landed five-star running back Savion Hiter, who will hit the field in the Maize and Blue this upcoming football season. Alford was also instrumental in landing Michigan's top running back in the 2027 class, four-star recruit Tyson Robinson.

Now, Alford is the lead recruiter on Ligon, and it seems he is doing a pretty dang good job making the Ohio native feel at home in Michigan. If Whittingham can continue to build the Ohio pipeline with the help of Alford, it could mean the Wolverines are in for even more recruiting battles with the Buckeyes.

Ligon could be another in the long line of great running backs to choose Michigan, coming in as the No. 10 back in the Class of 2028 so far. With 24 offers already, Ligon could have his pick of schools when he decides to make his commitment, but it's pretty clear Michigan is a leader already.

While Whittingham struggled to recruit in-state this offseason, being an elite out-of-state recruiter is huge in its own right. Whittingham is already hot on the recruiting trail for the Class of 2028, hosting multiple recruits and a few already putting Michigan on their contenders list.

Ligon could be the next recruit to look at Michigan as his top school, and it would be another huge out-of-state recruiting win for Whittingham, especially hailing from the Buckeye state.
