Michigan's insane recruiting run continued on the Fourth of July on Friday as four-star wide receiver Travis Johnson committed to the Wolverines.

The 6-foot-3, 180-pound wide receiver out of Virginia, is ranked No. 144 overall in the 2026 class, according to the 247 Sports composite rankings.
Johnson chose Michigan football over Penn State, North Carolina, South Carolina, Indiana, and 36 total offers. It's the second top-150 recruit at wide receiver in this class and here are three thoughts.
A polished recruit
Michigan has been wanting to land some bigger receivers, and twice recently, the Wolverines have landed a 6-foot-3 pass catcher. Zion Robinson has a chance to be special. He's got a really high ceiling but needs some development.
Johnson is a little more polished. The ceiling might be a little lower. He had 1,067 yards receiving last season. He's also a basketball player. Johnson shows good run-after-catch ability, but is also good at jump balls.
The 247 Sports scouting report calls Johnson's game "matured," which should give him a chance to play early. Either way, this is three wide receiver commitments ranked in the top 150 overall in the past two classes (Andrew Marsh and Zion Robinson), so the Wolverines are starting to surround Bryce Underwood with the kind of talent the elite quarterback needs to thrive.
Michigan keeps moving up
The Wolverines have 20 commitments total right now. They are ranked seventh in the 247 Sports composite team rankings for the 2026 class, and they have 13 blue-chip players committed (65 percent).
Since June 9th, Michigan football has landed 13 commitments. Eight of those commitments have come from recruits ranked in the top 200 of the 247 Sports composite rankings. Michigan has 10 players committed in the top 200, and a chance to add 3-4 others. Maybe more.
It's been a spectacular run. For years, fans have wanted Michigan to get some wide receivers like Johnson. The Wolverines have delivered. Give Ron Bellamy his flowers.
Is Michigan done at wide receiver?
Hopefully, not. Calvin Russell has a decision set for July 5th. The contenders are Michigan, Syracuse, Florida State, and Oregon.
LSU and Miami seemed like the biggest threats, but Syracuse has emerged as the primary competition. Russell is 6-foot-5, 195 pounds. He's a five-star, according to the On3 Industry rankings and would be the best commitment since Nico Collins.
There has been one projection for Michigan to land Russell. The trend hasn't started, but if Sherrone Moore gets Russell, it will be one of the best hauls Michigan has ever had at wide receiver, one good enough to completely transform the position.
