Opinions vary on how Michigan's recruiting class stands in the 2027 cycle. Some remain positive about the outlook, while others are not pleased with how things have progressed. With signing day still months away, Michigan football can enhance its chances of obtaining a better class by continuing to raise its own bar in its drive to fight for supremacy and win on the field.

3 bold predictions for Michigan's 2027 recruiting class

Michigan flips Josh Dobson from South Carolina

Even after committing to South Carolina, Dobson is leaving the door open to a possible flip in the future. Michigan was reportedly in his final two destinations. Frank Beamer is one of the coaches on the hot seat and if the Gamecocks stumble out of the gates, then they are poised to be looking for a new coach. The other way would be to increase their NIL offer so that Dobson can't resist. He would instantly become the centerpiece of the entire class.

One or two current commits earn an elusive fifth star

No one in the class has yet to be rated with the five-star status. In the recent ranking updates, some Michigan verbals have made the jump up the ladder, but not high enough. When studying the main recruiting sites, they are bullish on Quentin Burrell and Kamden Lopati. Quarterbacks tend to get the benefit of the doubt when it comes to how they are evaluated. For instance, Lopati is the No. 1 pocket passer according to ESPN. 247Sports is higher on Jakari Lipsey than other sites. If one of Michigan's defensive end recruits were three to five inches taller, then they would be slotted higher, too.

Michigan finishes with a top 10 class

In a conference with Ohio State and Oregon hovering around the top five, Michigan can save face with a strong finish and wind up in the top 10 nationally. It would take a Dobson flip, one or two current pledges to earn a coveted fifth star, and a couple of signing day surprises. In total, if Whittingham and his staff can somehow pull it off, about three five-star signings should do the trick to vault them up the pecking order.
