Michigan basketball has explored a few options in the transfer portal but the best one by far is Terrance Shannon.

There is much we don’t know about Michigan basketball’s roster heading into next season and it’s hard to assess all of the Wolverines’ needs until we know what happens with Hunter Dickinson, Moussa Diabate, and Caleb Houstan.

There have been plenty of rumblings about those decisions and there seems to be buzz growing about Dickinson returning to Michigan basketball next season.

It makes sense because Dickinson isn’t being projected as a second-round pick and while he could change that, he could be destined for the G-League next season, and that potential salary could be matched or exceeded by a potential NIL deal.

Dickinson’s draft stock probably isn’t going to be that impacted by an extra season with the Wolverines so if he can make the same amount of money, why not return? He loves Michigan and he didn’t look like a guy ready to leave at the spring game.

As long as either Dickinson or Diabate returns, Michigan basketball will have a starting center for next season. There could be a potential need at the four but what Michigan really needs going into next season is a two-guard.

That’s where Texas Tech transfer Terrance Shannon comes in.

Why Shannon is the best option for Michigan basketball

Recently, we broke down why Shannon would be a great fit for the Wolverines. He’s 6-foot-6, is a plus-defender, and shot 38 percent from 3-point range last season (35 percent for his career). He would be an ideal starter at the two, especially if Kobe Bufkin doesn’t make a leap.

The Wolverines would need a scholarship to add a guy like Shannon and the first obstacle is that both Illinois and Kentucky are in the mix, and at one point, were considered the favorites.

The other obstacle, of course, is Michigan, well the admissions process at least. Michigan always has issues getting transfers that aren’t freshmen or graduates and Shannon is neither and there are indications that he wants to come to Michigan but that the credits will be an issue.

This has nothing to do with grades. It’s that Michigan only allows so many credits to transfer, which can mean an extra year to graduate, which is why it’s easy to understand players going elsewhere.

Ant Wright, the former Michigan basketball player has been all over this and on a recent podcast, he hinted at the situation, indicating that Shannon is interested but credits transferring could be a problem.

Illinois seems like the first choice but the decision of Kofi Cockburn could have an impact on Shannon’s decision, which will be something to watch.
