Can Michigan beat good teams on the road?

Over the past two seasons, Michigan football has only lost one game at home. Even against ranked teams the past two seasons, U-M is 5-1 at the Big House.

Unfortunately, on the road, it’s been an entirely different story. In true road games since his first year on the job, Harbaugh’s Wolverines are 1-6 against ranked teams, with the only win coming in 2018, on the road against No. 24 Michigan State, so even that wasn’t all that impressive.

Going back further, the Wolverines haven’t beaten a top-10 team on the road since Lloyd Carr was the head coach, Chad Henne was quarterback, Mike Hart was the running back and Mario Manningham destroyed Notre Dame on the road in 2006.

This year, if Michigan wants to win the Big Ten East or even have a chance to do so in the final game against Ohio State, it has to win on the road. Not only does U-M play at the Buckeyes, but road trips loom at Minnesota and Michigan State.

And with a fifth-road game likely added against a Big Ten West opponent such as Iowa or Nebraska, the road schedule could be even more difficult. So if this 10-game season is going to amount to anything, the Wolverines have to find more success away from the Big House.
