McCaffrey holds off Milton

Milton winning the job is a real possibility. But if he doesn’t show enough in fall camp to win the job outright, it’s possible McCaffrey could get the nod in the season opener.

If that happens, then he will have the chance to cement himself in that role and he’s certainly capable of that. He was a high-ranking four-star quarterback out of high school and there has been plenty of hype surrounding him with Michigan football too.

For McCaffrey, it will come down to throwing the football accurately, especially down the field and staying healthy. He has a great skill set running the football and that’s something the Wolverines haven’t really had at quarterback since Denard Robinson.

And McCaffrey throws it better than he did, although he also won’t run as well.

Still, with his running ability, backs like Zach Charbonnet, Hassan Haskins, Chris Evans and Blake Corum, not to mention Giles Jackson at times, this running game could be elite.

That main point is that if McCaffrey opens as the starter and wins games, it’s going to be hard for Milton to overtake him. I don’t think Milton will sit all year either, but it’s harder to play him off the bench than McCaffrey, who is more versatile.

And after a shortened season, if McCaffrey does remain the starter, you could see Milton moving up, leaving J.J. McCarthy as the heir apparent.
