Milton takes the job and wows

When it comes to McCaffrey and Milton, I think it’s a pretty 50/50 thing. Milton has the better arm, at least in terms of arm strength and McCaffrey has the better legs. Accuracy will be a key factor for both, as well as taking care of the football and simply staying healthy.

Playing a Big Ten only schedule makes easing into the season a little more difficult. The two non-conference games at home were cakewalks and heading into Wisconsin, Michigan would have had some idea about what it had at quarterback.

Now, it could have to find out against the likes of Wisconsin and Penn State right from the start. The good thing is that the Wolverines should be stout again defensively, plus the offensive line is really talented and the running game should ease the pressure off the QB early.

That’s why I don’t think Jim Harbaugh and Josh Gattis would shy away from starting Milton if they thought he was the best man for the job. I still think McCaffrey would get a chance to run and play a few series because his dual-threat ability could still be utilized.

Often when you have a “running” option at quarterback, that player isn’t as big a threat to throw. That’s not the case with McCaffrey. The entire playbook would be available and he’d have no problem running an entire series.

Still, in this scenario, Milton would establish himself as the long-term starter and unless he played well enough to leave for the NFL draft after the season, it’s likely he would start in 2021 and McCaffrey would grad transfer somewhere else.
