A jumbled mess

The one thing you can’t have if you are Michigan football is the kind of situation, where you go into the Ohio State game without a real pecking order at the position.

It’s fine to mix and match some during the first part of the season, at least when it was non-conference action, but you don’t want to go into “The Game” without a clear-cut starter and I’ll admit, I’m worried of that scenario playing out.

Maybe the lack of reps will hurt the development of the quarterbacks or maybe they just don’t play as well as we expect them to. But the worst-case scenario is the two battling all year for the job going back and forth.

The saying is that if you have two quarterbacks, you really have none and that’s pretty true. So if Michigan is still constantly moving back and forth between Milton and McCaffrey then, it won’t be a promising thing.

That will probably mean a 7-8 win season or less (out of 10 games) and potentially, another quarterback battle in the offseason, unless one decided to transfer after 2020.

This scenario is probably the most likely to get McCarthy in the starting lineup in 2021, but for the long-term success of the program, having an established quarterback produce this season is the best thing. Otherwise, it could get painful, especially at the end.
