Michigan Football: 5 key takeaways from Wolverines first two games
Gattis is learning on the job
When Michigan football hired Josh Gattis, fans celebrated. Finally, it seemed like the Wolverines were going to take their offense out of the stone age.
Only in the first two weeks and especially against Army, the offense got pretty conservative and it left a lot of people scratching their heads. Where is the no-huddle, up-tempo, speed-in-space system we were promised?
For one, Patterson wasn’t 100 percent and maybe that limited things a little, although it seems curious that the team wouldn’t just go with a healthy Dylan McCaffrey. But you can see that even though Jim Harbaugh isn’t calling the plays, he’s a huge part of the decision-making process.
Of course, Gattis has to follow the wishes of the head coach but he also needs to make sure this offense is doing what it takes to showcase its many talented athletes. So far, it’s hard to call the experiment a success.
But after getting a week off to study and self-scout, you get the feeling things will change for the better. Gattis is new at this too and will likely have to adjust. Hopefully, he does, because it’s time for the offense to carry its weight.
