The freshmen have had a limited impact

There was a ton of hype in fall camp and even dating back to last spring about Michigan football’s 2019 recruiting class and with guys like Daxton Hill, Chris Hinton, Mazi Smith and Charbonnet, it easy to see why.

Other like Giles Jackson and Mike Sainristil were also slated to make an impact. However, up to this point, Charbonnet is really the only one with a major role on the offense or defense.

Hill, a five-star safety in 2019, caught a pass on a fake punt and that was his biggest contribution so far. He hasn’t done much on defense and neither has Hinton or Smith, two defensive tackles some thought could play early.

It takes time of course and there is an adjustment from high school to college. It’s also too early to call any of these guys a disappointment. The bottom line is that the coaches have stuck with veteran players who have earned their spot, especially on defense.

Hill and some of those guys could see a bigger role, especially with the bye week. But if they don’t, it’s not the worst thing in the world. Michigan has a lot of depth and the inability of these talented freshmen to make an early impact is just a reminder of that.
