What Ty Haywood decommitting from Alabama means for Michigan football

In an expected turn of events, five-star offensive tackle Ty Haywood has decommitted from Alabama. The Wolverines will look to continue to make strides in his recruitment as they are seen as the frontrunner with previous predictions.

Ty Haywood, a 5-star offensive tackle from Denton, Texas, originally was committed to Alabama since mid-2024 before announcing his decommitment on Monday. Standing at 6-foot-5 and 285 pounds, he would be one of the highest-rated prospects in the 2025 Michigan football recruiting class.

Despite his previous commitment, the Wolverines have ramped up their efforts to recruit him, with Sherrone Moore and OL Coach Grant Newsome making visits to Texas to extend an offer.

Critical to Continue Elite OL Play

You would think with Michigan's history as back-to-back Joe Moore award winners that they would be able to out-recruit anyone in the nation for offensive lineman, but that hasn't always been the case. In fact, besides current Michigan football commit Andrew Babalola, Haywood would be Michigan's highest-ranked OT this decade.

Adding a talent like Haywood would not only continue Michigan's long-lasting tradition but would address an ever-growing need. With several key offensive linemen departing for the NFL and transfer portal, Haywood's size, athleticism, and versatility would provide immediate depth. At his current frame, he possesses the physical tools and technique to compete with the current roster.

I believe that Haywood and Babalola could be the greatest OL duo in Michigan football history. It's not every day that two Five-Star OL walk through Schembechler Hall, but that may be the case in the upcoming years.
