We all know who the Michigan football starting quarterback is going to be this season, but it seems the Wolverines are still searching for some veteran assurance.
After some reports that Michigan football might explore a transfer portal quarterback in the spring, due to the injury status of Mikey Keene, the Wolverines didn't add anyone.
However, Keene is getting healthier. Chris Balas of The Wolverine reported on Friday that Keene is throwing and is expected to be healthy for the 2025 season.
That hasn't stopped Michigan from going after another transfer portal quarterback. There have been rumblings about the Wolverines adding another quarterback. Then, all of a sudden on Friday, transfer portal quarterback Jake Garcia got two projections to sign with U-M from EJ Holland and Pete Nakos of On3.com.
Garcia has played for Miami, Missouri, and East Carolina. He spent last season with the Pirates and completed 60.2 percent of his passes to go along with eight touchdown passes and 12 interceptions.
What another quarterback could mean for Michigan football
Some Michigan fans, and of course rival fans, who don't live in reality, are trying to make it out that the Wolverines are worried about Bryce Underwood.
Nothing could be further from the truth. Garcia has started games for Miami and East Carolina. It's always good to have a backup with experience. Michigan is thin on that.
Underwood and Jadyn Davis were the only quarterbacks to take part in the spring. Underwood is expected to start. Davis has been a disappointment so far, heading into this second season.
Garcia could provide some veteran insurance this season and next. He could still have another year of eligibility, which makes the addition even better for the Wolverines. Keene will be moving on after this season. Davis could be leaving via the transfer portal, but it's clear the coaching staff doesn't have a ton of trust in him anyway.
All in all, I wouldn't read much into this addition, assuming it happens. Michigan wants more experience in the QB room, but that's not a reflection of Underwood. If anything, I'd be worried about Keene, because if he's not healthy, Garcia might end up being QB2.
