Two truths and a lie from Michigan football win over Michigan State
Michigan football can relish the Paul Bunyan Trophy being home in Ann Arbor for another year after the Wolverines won their third straight game over the Spartans, 24-17 on Saturday night.
Michigan has won five of seven against the Spartans and for the first time since 1948, Sherrone Moore beat Michigan State as a first-time head coach.
That's something that Jim Harbaugh and Bo Schembechler didn't do. Moore has also beaten Michigan State and Ohio State in his first attempts, which bodes well for his future.
If Moore can beat those teams, he'll be the head coach at Michigan for as long as he wants. Of course, that will be easier said than done because this year's team isn't last year's team. But the win over MSU was at least a positive sign for a program that needed something positive.
Truth: Sherrone Moore earned some goodwill
Some people were crazy enough to call for Sherrone Moore to be fired after seven games. I get the frustration but Moore deserves three years, at least, to show what he can do.
Michigan football deserves to recruit with a stable head-coaching situation for the first time since 2019. The Wolverines are already seeing some dividends on the recruiting trail and this class could have even more top-100 commitments, and maybe another 5-star before it's all said and done.
Yes, Moore needs to fix the quarterback position. But is he the reason it's broken? He was the OC but Jim Harbaugh, the head coach, didn't do all he could to recruit the position for the future. That's just the truth whether it was a lack of effort or understanding about the importance of NIL.
Moore is trying to land Bryce Underwood. He landed Brady Hart in the 2026 class and if the Wolverines miss on Underwood, they'll need to be active in the portal.
Those are all good things. That's why it's a good thing Michigan football won on Saturday. The pitchforks would have been out. Now, if the Wolverines can at least make a bowl game, we should avoid any hot-seat talk for Moore, which was ridiculous anyway.
