Sherrone Moore teases much-needed change for Michigan football O-line
There are more than a few things that Michigan football needed to fix over the bye week. One of them is the right tackle spot.
Whether Evan Link remains the starting right tackle or the Wolverines go with another option, it's clear that the play of the first six games wasn't good enough.
Sherrone Moore talks about possible a change on Michigan football O-line
Link, a sophomore, earned the job in fall camp, beating out Jeff Persi and Andrew Gentry, two veteran players. Persi had even started a game at left tackle against Rutgers a couple of years back and held up fine.
Link was a blue-chip recruit though and his run blocking showed promise. It still does, but the pass protection has been a major issue and on Monday, Michigan football head coach Sherrone Moore said that U-M was looking at right tackle, especially if Myles Hinton was healthy enough to start on the left side.
“If Myles is back, he’ll start. We’ll see at right tackle,” Moore said via The Wolverines. “I thought Crip (Greg Crippen) did a really good job … a really good job controlling the line of scrimmage with the calls, especially in that environment. Being pretty calm. He’s been a guy that’s traveled to different places, and seen it. It looks like he’ll cement himself there and continue to work there. We’ll see what happens with Dom.
“[Jeff] Persi gave some great experience being an older guy. It gives us a challenge at the other spot (right tackle) to see what he can do. There’s always competition.”
It sounds like Greg Crippen will continue to start at center. At the very least, Moore liked what he saw in the game against Washington. Persi started at left tackle in that game and played well. That's why he's generating buzz about starting on the right side.
Link has long-term upside but the Wolverines need to put the five best guys out there. At least give Jack Tuttle and the rest of the offense a fighting chance.
