Being a sports fan can be frustrating, but that hasn't been the routine for Michigan diehards lately. Ever since 2021, the football and basketball programs have been the only ones in the country to capture a national title in both sports, allowing U-M fans to create some of the fondest memories that will last a lifetime in the hearts of so many. Ranking just five moments from those runs was hard to do, but not as impossible as they once seemed to be.
Toppling Tom Izzo at the Breslin Center, running it 32 straight times just to get past Penn State at Happy Valley and the flip of Bryce Underwood. These are some of the moments that didn't make the list.
Ranking Michigan's 5 greatest moments since 2021
5. Michigan claims the Big Ten championship in Football and Basketball
Three straight football championships that took two decades to wait for. Then an unlikely run in the Big Ten basketball tournament, that resulted in a regular season championship, just two years after an 8-24 embarrassment of a Fab Five icon. That's basically a championship for every year this decade. That's unprecedented even for Michigan's illustrious history.
4. Michigan ends the Nick Saban era in a dramatic Rose Bowl encounter for the ages
To get to the summit of the sport, it was inevitable that Michigan football would have to go through the greatest coach that the game has ever seen to move on to the last roadblock. On January 1st, 2024, Michigan engineered the most prolific comeback in program history to rip the hearts out of Alabama's dynasty once and for all. It may be considered by some as the greatest win in the annals of Michigan football.
3. Michigan Football beats Ohio State 4 times in a row
Patiently waiting for 10 years to dethrone their nemesis on the gridiron was bitterly agonizing, but worth it in the long run. To do it three more times afterwards was unlike any feeling in the world. Winning in Columbus twice after not doing it for an eternity was like winning the jackpot that's been building up for months. At Michigan, football is king, but the basketball team trumped this feat just last month.
2. Michigan survives UConn to cut down the nets in basketball
In November of 2025, it looked like a certainty that Michigan was going to run away with the national championship by leaps and bounds. Along the way, they lost their backup point guard and appeared mortal. Once the Madness began, they recaptured their form and were not tested until the final minutes of the season. In the process, they secured a second national championship within two years and cemented the Wolverines as one of the greatest teams ever to lace up the sneakers.
1. Michigan wins the National Championship in Football
Culminating the most historic season in Michigan football with a championship was pure ecstasy. During the journey, the Wolverines eclipsed 1,000 wins, shut out Michigan State, beat an unbeaten Ohio State, retired Nick Saban, and created the number one moment in Michigan football history in the last 25 years. It's hard to top that royal milestone with so many to choose from recently.
