Promising freshman is Michigan basketball's first transfer portal departure

Winters Grady was expected to contribute early for Michigan basketball, but it didn't materialize.

Winters Grady, a signee in the Michigan basketball 2025 recruiting class, was one of the elite high school shooters in the country.

However, after seeing limited action this season, due in part to injury, Grady will take his stellar 3-point shot to the transfer portal, according to reports on Wednesday.

What the departure of Winters Grady means for Michigan

The 6-foot-6 wing was ranked 95th overall, according to the 247 Sports composite rankings in the 2025 class. He did play nine games this season, averaging 2.9 points and 1.1 rebounds. He's expected to get a medical redshirt for this season, which should give him four years left to play.

Grady attempted 20 shots this season. 19 of those were from the 3-point line, with six makes (31.6 percent). That's a small sample size. If teams are looking for shooting, though, they should give Grady a call.

Michigan could have used him next season, but it felt like things were headed in this direction. Earlier this offseason, Dusty May said one of his players was contacted by other programs. Some guessed that it was Winters. May also didn't complain, by the way. He was explaining how that's just part of the game nowadays.

Grady has indeed entered the portal. He should have plenty of suitors. It will be interesting to see where he lands, but it was clear there was some concern about his role moving forward. Michigan is bringing in one of the most dynamic scorers in the portal, who can play the three, for a visit.

The too-100 freshman will walk away with a national championship ring, and May, who is expected to sign six freshmen, has more flexibility.
