Sherrone Moore isn't Jim Harbaugh, but Michigan football fans should believe anyway

Sherrone Moore said this week that he's not Jim Harbaugh, but that shouldn't stop Michigan football fans from believing in him.

It's hard to replace a legend. That's true regardless of the sport, whether you are a player or a coach. Frank Solich was a good coach at Nebraska but he wasn't Tom Osborne.

Michigan football is in a similar situation. Harbaugh's not Tom Osborne but he is the first head coach since Osborne in 1997 to not return as the head coach for the national champions.

Dr. Tom retired. Harbaugh went to the NFL. Both helped choose their replacement even though Harbaugh's endorsement wasn't needed for Sherrone Moore to become the next Michigan football head coach. He earned the job and gives the Wolverines the best hope for success moving forward.

Yet, at Big Ten Media Days this week, even Sherrone acknowledged that he's not Jim Harbaugh.

“Yeah, it’s being me,” Moore said via The Wolverine. “I can’t be Coach. I can’t be Jim Harbaugh and I never will be. So, for me, I just go as I go.”

“I’m not going to change how I am. When I get excited, I’m going to get excited. When I want to yell smash, I’m going to yell smash. When I want us to play violent, I’m going to let our players know. That’s what I’m going to do,” Moore continued. “But, when I love them, I love them. When I feel like they need a hug, I’m going to give them a hug.”

Moore is more proven than the usual first-time head coach

The difference between Moore and other first-time head coach, is that we have seen him in action. He went 4-0 as acting head coach and won two top-10 games, including a win over Ohio State.

Moore has handled the transition like a dream and recruiting is finally getting to the level you'd expect of a team that's been to the College Football Playoff three straight years. Beyond that, Moore was elite as an offensive line coach and an offensive coordinator. He's also been one of Michigan's best recruiters since the day he was hired.

Moore can't be Jim Harbaugh, but it wouldn't shock me if he won like him.
