Jim Harbaugh did a lot of great things for the Michigan football program during his time as the head coach. One of the best was hiring Sherrone Moore as the tight ends coach.

Eventually, Moore became the offensive line coach, the co-offensive coordinator, the offensive coordinator, an interim head coach for four games and finally the Michigan football head coach after Harbaugh left to take over the Chargers.

Moore talked about the process on the "Big Noon Conversations" with Joel Klatt. Moore told Klatt that at the beginning of the 2023 season, Harbaugh told Moore that he was going to have it put into his contract that if he ever left, Moore would be the next head coach.

“Coach Harbaugh told me, ‘You’re gonna be the next head coach at Michigan.’ This year, he told me that. He said, ‘I don’t know when. I don’t know what’s gonna happen. No man can say the future, tell the future.’ But that’s how he is — he’s like that all the time. He just said, ‘You’re gonna be the next head coach at Michigan.’ I was like, ‘What?’ He was like, ‘I’m gonna put it in my contract that if I ever leave or go somewhere that you’re gonna be the next head coach at Michigan.’ He told me that at the beginning of the year. And I was just like, ‘What?’”

Moore said he just kept working after that. Michigan football went on to win the national championship with a 15-0 record. Moore was the head coach for three of those wins including top-10 wins over Penn State and Ohio State.

In his interview with Klatt, Moore also talks about the final drive in the Rose Bowl and much more. You should check it out. Moore also talked about when he found out about Harbaugh's departure and becoming the head coach soon after, just like Harbaugh said he would.

“I saw it. I was going through TSA, and it popped up on my phone — ’Jim Harbaugh to the Chargers.’ And that second, my phone — text messages, calls, text messages calls. “Our AD, our assistant AD — ’ Hey you gotta come back right now.’ So I do the interview that next day and got the job on Saturday. Press conference, was on the road recruiting on Monday, and that was it. It was a humbling experience,” Moore said.
