Michigan Wolverines news: A key transfer portal departure, plus staff shakeup
Michigan football had avoided losing any key players to the transfer portal, but that changed on Friday morning as former top-100 safety Keon Sabb announced that he will leave the Michigan Wolverines to enter the transfer portal.
Sabb notched 28 tackles and had two interceptions this past season for Michigan football. He also had a key pass breakup in the national championship game.
While Sabb wasn't technically a starter at the safety position for the Michigan Wolverines, he was going to have a bigger role this season and could have seen lots of snaps in a big nickel role. That was something I was hoping we would see, but Sabb will take his talents elsewhere.
This further underscores the need for Michigan football to add some talent via the transfer portal in the secondary. Safety isn't a glaring need with Rod Moore and Makari Paige returning, but the Wolverines need a No. 2 corner and someone who can play in the slot.
Michigan Wolverines suffer a coaching staff shakeup
It was reported on Wednesday that Michigan football was going to hire Houston Texas safeties coach Stephen Adegoke to be the secondary coach, taking over for Steve Clinkscale.
However, DeMeco Ryans, the Texans head coach made a strong push for Adegoke to stay and instead of joining the Michigan Wolverines, Adegoke will stay in the NFL according to Sam Webb of the Michigan Insider.
It's a blow for Michigan football because Adegoke is a rising star. He was also on the Michigan Wolverines coaching staff as a graduate assistant in 2021, so it would have been a popular move among the players in the secondary.
Yet, what's done is done. Lamar Morgan, the Louisiana defensive coordinator, also interviewed for the job. I wrote earlier this week how he would be a perfect fit for the Wolverines and I still believe that. He worked for Jesse Minter at Vanderbilt and has play-calling experience.
i don't think Sherrone Moore could have gone wrong either way. Adegoke's ties to the players might have been the tiebreaker and you wonder if Sabb's departure has anything to do with the news that Adegoke is staying in the NFL.
However, if Michigan football hires Morgan, that's still a good move in my book.
