Michigan football: In Depth Review of Fresno State and Looking Ahead to Texas
By Cullen Corr
Davis Warren and Alex Orji
The biggest question of the offseason was who will start at quarterback. On Monday we finally got an answer as Davis Warren ran out with the first team offense to take the first snap of the game.
I'll do a more in-depth breakdown of Warren's performance, but to summarize, there's a lot to like about his ability and a lot of things that he'll need to clean up over the course of the season. He has a ton of talent and from what we can tell, he is a great leader for this offense. However, he's going to have to improve his footwork and comfort reading the defense.
All night Warren just looked a little hesitant. He seemed like he was playing not to turn the ball over instead of to make plays. Coming out of a quarterback competition, with a lot of uncertainty as to whether he'll remain the starter, this makes sense. I think that the coaching staff needs to give him some confidence that he can afford to make a mistake without losing their trust or the starting job.
For Alex Orji, he showed his incredible athleticism several times on Saturday. He's one of the best athletes, if not the best, on this team. Michigan football is going to need him to win some of these big games this year. I'd like to see Michigan work him in for more than a play at a time so that he can get in rhythm a little more. We saw the pass that he skipped off the turf in the 4th quarter. That was really just a result of him not having attempted a pass since early in the game.
Overall this room has a ton of potential and just needs some experience to get going. Oh and by the way -- Tight End Colston Loveland is going to be every bit as good as we thought this season.
