It's hard to believe that the Michigan football defense could be even better than last season when the Wolverines won the national championship.

Michigan was incredible on defense last season and many of the 13 draft picks were on that side of the ball including day-two picks such as Junior Colson, Kris Jenkins, and Mike Sainristil.

You don't just replace guys like that. But part of college football is developing new talent and seeing it emerge. Zeke Berry comes to mind at the nickel spot. There has been talk that he could have All-American potential and if that's true, the loss of Mikey won't sting so bad.

The front seven is going to the strength of this defense. Michigan football has great pieces in the secondary too led by All-American Will Johnson, but you can't have a great defense without a great defensive line.

Could Michigan defense be even better?

Michigan has a great defensive line. I'd argue that it will be the best defensive line in college football this season. The linebackers will be studs too. I can't wait to see what Jaishawn Barham can do and have zero doubt that Ernest Hausmann can be an All-Big Ten player.

Those were elite additions via the transfer portal. Mason Graham, the All-American defensive tackle and projected first-round pick has seen it up close, and here's what he told Sam Webb of The Michigan Insider about whether the defense could improve this season.

"Jaishawn Barham… we just got him out of Maryland. He's a really good player. I think he's going to go crazy for us this year just being in our defense. Guys that have shown flashes, but really haven't been in the spotlight (like) Josaiah Stewart and Derek Moore, I feel like those guys are going to have a great season working along with me and KG. I feel we've had a lot of development and a lot of the younger guys are starting to step up and make flashes. And we're going to need those guys to make some plays and be there in those big games. I feel our defense definitely has the chance to be better than we were last year."
