Michigan football added another blue-chip commitment on Saturday and added the first cornerback to the 2025 class as Jayden Sanders, a four-star recruit from Texas pledged to the Wolverines.

Oklahoma State and Baylor were among the other contenders for the 6-foot-2, 172-pound defender who is ranked No. 317 overall according to the 247 Sports composite rankings in the 2025 class.

Sanders took his visit during the Michigan football BBQ and that locked down his commitment which he announced on Saturday morning. The Wolverines have 16 commitments total now in the 2025 class and 12 of them are blue-chips.

Here are three thoughts on the newest Michigan football commitment.

Another recruiting win for Lamar Morgan

Sherrone Moore hired a dawg in Lamar Morgan, especially on the recruiting trail. Morgan has not only landed two top-100 defensive backs in the 2025 class but now, he's landed another defensive back with a lot of upside.

Sanders is a great fit for what the Wolverines want. He's 6-foot-2 and he's a three-sport athlete. His scouting report says that he doesn't get caught from behind on offense. He even scored two special teams touchdowns this season and seven more on offense.

Back to Morgan though, you have to be impressed with the work he's done in the 2025 class and he got a late start. Imagine what he can do in the upcoming 2026 class and beyond when he has a full cycle to build a relationship and recruit players.

I know the offer list might not include a bunch of powerhouse programs but betting on a four-star from Texas isn't a bad bet.

Michigan football fills a need

Ivan Taylor is one of the top-100 safeties committed to Michigan football in the 2025 class and like Daxton Hill, he can also play cornerback and nickel. His dad is Ike Taylor, the former Steelers standout.

He's not the same kind of athlete as Hill, but his scouting report notes his above-the-rim finishing ability in basketball. His best fit is playing cornerback on the outside and the Wolverines are going to need another starter or two to develop in the future after Will Johnson departs for the NFL.

There could be a chance to earn some early playing time. Sanders had three interceptions last season is comfortable in man coverage. It feels like there is a lot to work with for Morgan. It's hard to say if Sanders can make an immediate impact on defense next season, but long term, he feels like a multi-year starter for the Wolverines.

Getting momentum back

Last week, the Wolverines lost the commitment of Phillip Wright, who flipped to LSU. Michigan also missed on DJ Sanders earlier in the week.

It wasn't a huge surprise but there was hope that Michigan could sway the top-100 defensive tackle to join the Wolverines 2025 class. Sanders, the DB, is from Kilgore, Texas, and with the competition in the Lone Star State, you always feel good landing a blue chip from there.

Michigan's blue-chip percentage for 2025 is back to 75 percent. The Wolverines are still in the mix for some other elite targets, such as five-star Andrew Babalola, but after the recruiting momentum had stalled a bit, and this gets it back, plus puts U-M back in the top 15 (14th) for the 2025 class according to the team rankings.
