Michigan will have to overtake Notre Dame for WR recruit who is a top priority

Michigan football just beat out Notre Dame for a blue-chip QB, and will need to do it again to land an elite wide receiver.

Michigan football is starting to hit its stride on the recruiting trail under first-year head coach Kyle Whittingham.

The Wolverines just landed the commitment of four-star quarterback Kamden Lopati, a former Illinois commitment that Notre Dame was also pushing hard to get into its 2027 class.

Michigan football won out with the top-10 quarterback. If the Wolverines want to land elite wideout Quentin Burrel, they will need to do the same thing.

Michigan football will have to knock off Notre Dame for elite wideout

Burrell, a 6-foot-2, 195-pound wide receiver in the 2027 class, ranked 77th overall out of Chicago, released his top four on Wednesday. Michigan made the cut, but so did Missouri, Notre Dame, and Arizona State, according to Rivals.

Beyond including Michigan in his final list, Burrell also lined up official visits, at least with Michigan, Notre Dame, and Arizona State. His official visit to Arizona State will come on April 24th. Notre Dame's visit is on June 12th, followed by a visit to Michigan on June 19th.

Michigan had Burrell on campus twice in the fall. The Wolverines fell back a bit during the coaching change, but they have regained their position as a top contender. Arizona State and Notre Dame have hosted Burrell multiple times this spring. Those teams have momentum.

Michigan is far from out of it, though. The Wolverines have found their footing on the recruiting trail, and even though it will be difficult to overcome the Irish for the wideout with back-to-back 1,100-yard seasons and 34 receiving touchdowns, Michigan clearly has a shot.

The Wolverines turned the tide quickly with Lopati. This recruitment will be more difficult to do than that; there aren't the same ties, but things already feel different than they did a couple of months ago.
