Michigan football has been heating up on the recruiting trail and on Tuesday, the Wolverines landed the biggest commitment of the Kyle Whittingham era.
To be fair, that's only been since December. There are plenty of big-time recruiting wins to come. However, Michigan football landed a big one on Tuesday, completing the flip of four-star quarterback Kamden Lopati, who decommitted from Illinois earlier this week.
Michigan now has received its first notable QB commitment of the Kyle Whittingham era, as four-star Kamden Lopati has pledged to the Wolverines for the 2027 season. The 6-3, 220-pound prospect is rated among the top 10 quarterbacks in this recruiting cycle. pic.twitter.com/ph5PpeUcus

Lopati, who is actually from Utah, committed to Illinois last July. Jason Beck, the Michigan offensive coordinator, and Koy Detmer Jr, the quarterbacks coach, pursued Lopati while they were at Utah.
So it wasn't surpising to see them push for him at Michigan. Lopati visited twice this spring. He's also got an official visit scheduled for the summer.
A 'notable' recruiting win for Michigan football
Adam Schefter doesn't tweet much about recruiting, but he posted that Kyle Whittingham got his first "notable" commitment as Michigan football head coach.
The ESPN NFL insider is right. It's just the second four-star commitment since Whittingham took over as the head coach, in terms of high school recruits, and it's a quarterback. That's always important.
Peter Bourque decommitted shortly after Whittingham was hired. The offense is changing. It fits the 6-foot-2, 225-pound Lopati much better. He's ranked ninth among quarterbacks in the 2027 class. The QB out of West Valley City, Utah, is ranked No. 122 overall, according to the Rivals Industry Rankings.
Michigan has six commitments now in the 2027 class. There are three four-star prospects and three three-star commitments. Lopati is the highest-ranked. He passed for 2,671 yards and rushed for another 730 yards, which makes him a perfect fit for the Wolverines' offense.
Lopati's pledge also stocks the quarterback room well into the future. Bryce Underwood has three years of eligibility left and Tommy Carr, a freshman, has been stellar in fall camp.
Quarterback is the most important position in football and Michigan should have a solid room for years to come.
