Michigan football head coach Kyle Whittingham is closing in on his first major commitment.

The first-year head coach of the Wolverines landed a pair of three-star defenders recently, but after some strong efforts on the recruiting trail, Michigan is on the verge of completing the flip of four-star quarterback Kamden Lopati.

Lopati is 6-foot-2, 225 pounds out of West Valley, Utah. He's ranked No. 122 overall in the 2027 class, according to the Rivals Industry Rankings, and is ranked ninth among quarterbacks. Whittingham and his staff had knowledge of Lopati from their time at Utah.

Illinois landed his commitment in July. Michigan has been making a strong push, though, and on Monday, Lopati reopened his recruitment. ending things with the Fighting Illini, according to Rivals.

Michigan football in line to land 4-star quarterback

Recruiting was a question mark when Whittingham got hired. Then, top-100 quarterback Peter Borque decommitted soon after he was hired.

It made sense. Michigan is focusing on more dual-threat quarterbacks. It still put Michigan behind the 8-ball. However, with quarterbacks coach Koy Detmer Jr. leading the charge, the Wolverines got Lopati on campus twice this spring. He's scheduled for an official visit, too.

Notre Dame was making a strong push to flip him, too. Yet, the Wolverines got a projection from Steve Wiltfong of Rivals last week for the Rivals Recruiting Prediction machine. Some others have followed, and the Wolverines now have a 94 percent chance to land his commitment, after five experts projected him to Michigan last week.

Even though the Wolverines hosted another 2027 quarterback recently, it feels like there could be two in this class. Lopati's decommitment should mean that a commitment is coming, at least; that's what Michigan fans are hoping for.
