On the same day that a shake-ups in the personnel and recruiting departments of Michigan football were reported, the Wolverines suffered a decommitment from their top recruit in the 2027 recruiting class

Four-star quarterback Peter Bourque has reopened his commitment via Hayes Fawcett. He's been committed to Michigan football since last summer, after he pledged on August 11th.

Obviously, Bourque committed to the previous coaching staff. There was some concern about his commitment but he was expected to take a visit to Ann Arbor this spring.

It's hard to say this is connected to the departure of Sean Magee, which was reported earlier on Tuesday. Some others in the recruiting department have also departed. That might have been a final push, but it feels like this is more turnover connected to a new staff.

Bourque is ranked 86th overall in the 2027 class, according to the 247 Sports composite rankings. Yet the 247 Sports scouting report describes Bourque as a "towering pocket passer," which doesn't exactly sound like the kind of quarterback Whittingham and Jason Beck are used to.

Bryce Underwood, a true dual-threat quarterback, is a much better fit for this offense. That's not to suggest Michigan football didn't want Bourque. It's hard to know why he decommitted, outside of other programs having serious interest.

The Wolverines will need to reset their quarterback board in 2027, but with a new head coach, a new offensive coordinator, a new QB coach, and a new system, it's not the worst thing in the world.
