It feels like the need for Michigan football at wide receiver dates back a few classes. The Wolverines turned the corner in the 2025 class, landing Andrew Marsh, a high four-star from the state of Texas.
However, recruiting wins at wide receiver have been inconsistent over the past few cycles. That appears to be changing in the 2026 recruiting class for the Wolverines, though, as they already have a three-star prospect committed but are trending up with a trio ranked in the top 150 overall.
Michigan football trending up with elite wide receiver recruits
After an official visit to Ann Arbor this weekend, Michigan has been trending hard with expert projections to land 6-foot-3, 185-pound wide receiver Travis Johnson. He's also gotten On3 RPM predictions from Steve Wiltfong and EJ Holland of The Wolverine.
Johnson is ranked No. 144 overall in the 2026 class, according to the 247 Sports composite rankings. Out of Chesapeake, Virginia, Johnson would be a massive get.
However, the Wolverines are in a good spot with some other top targets, too. Zion Robinson also took an official visit earlier this month. Michigan feels like the leader, especially after he canceled a visit to TCU, where his dad is the director of track and field.
Robinson is a freakish athlete. He's also 6-foot-3, 180, and ranked No. 132 overall in the 2026 class, according to the 247 Sports composite rankings. Robinson has high jumped 6-8. He's also been clocked running the 100-meter dash in under 11 seconds.
Miami got him on campus for a visit this weekend. Stanford is next, but Michigan football feels like the team to beat, at least for now.
What's even more encouraging, or what should be for Michigan football fans, is that the Wolverines will host top-50 wideout Calvin Russell for an official visit.
247 Sports' rankings have Russell, a 6-foot-5, 195-pounder out of Miami, rated as a five-star prospect. He's ranked 46th overall in the composite rankings and recently put Michigan football in his top eight.
The Wolverines have been pushing for an official visit, and ahead of his July 5th commitment date, Russell will take an official visit to Ann Arbor on June 20th, according to 247 Sports.
Russell recently visited Florida State, Miami, LSU, and Oregon. It doesn't feel like a favorite has emerged which has opened the door for the Wolverines.
The dead period is coming soon. Plenty of decisions will come in July, but if Michigan can close with Russell, Robinson, and Johnson, it will have an elite haul of wide receivers, one that exceeds expectations.
