The 2026-27 Michigan basketball schedule just got a little easier, as the Wolverines and Duke Blue Devils will no longer meet for their previously announced matchup at Madison Square Garden.
Matt Norlander was the first to report the news, which was also reported by Jeff Borzello of ESPN. There were complications with broadcast partners from the very beginning, which finally came to a head.
NEWS: The Dec. 21 game between Duke and Michigan is OFF, sources told ESPN. Originally scheduled for MSG, then attempted to move to the Miami Marlins’ stadium, but all parties couldn’t come to a final agreement.

The Duke-Michigan game is now off. The Blue Devils will play Texas Tech at Madison Square Garden instead, reports Borzello.
It's disappointing because Michigan and Duke have history on the basketball court. They aren't rivals per se, but it's fun series. They used to have a home-and-home, and of course, met in the 1992 National Championship Game.
Michigan basketball still has an incredibly difficult schedule in 2026-27
Both teams are expected to be ranked in the top 10 next season, so it would have been a great early-season matchup. That being said, Dusty May loaded the Michigan basketball schedule with difficult opponents, so the Wolverines will still face one of the most challenging schedules in college basketball.
Even though Duke is now off the schedule, Michigan basketball, led by Mike Boynton, will square off against UConn in a national title rematch, as well as against Marquette and Villanova. The Wolverines will also take part in the Players Era Tournament again, which U-M won in 2026.
There were talks about moving the game to the Miami Marlins Stadium, but the two schools, Duke and Michigan, couldn't come to an agreement. It seems like the broadcast rights might have played a bigger role.

"Complications with the Big Ten's broadcasting deal — specifically, with that conference's TV partners believing Amazon did not have the rights to air that game — led the schools to look elsewhere to play, since New York City falls within the Big Ten's television footprint," CBS Sports reported.
Once Dusty May left for the NBA, it felt like there wasn't as much desire to get the details ironed out for the game, so Michigan and Duke won't meet next season, unless they happen to come across each other in the NCAA Tournament.
Despite losing May to the NBA, Boynton was able to keep 13 of the 14 players left on the roster, including all five projected starters.
