Michigan basketball head coach Dusty May has been linked to NBA jobs this offseason, but his focus remains on winning another national championship with the Wolverines.
May sat down for an interview with Brad Galli, and didn't back away from the idea that Michigan basketball can win another national championship this season.
Michigan 'capable' of another national title says Dusty May
"We have a lot of talent coming in. We have guys who are very capable of doing what the last group did as individuals, and so now it'll just be a matter of them doing it as well together," May told Galli.
The last group, as May called them, won a national championship, the Big Ten championship, and will have three players selected in the first round of the NBA draft.
Next season's Michigan basketball team has similar upside. Trey McKenney, who came off the bench last season, will take a major step forward, to the point he could be in consideration for Big Ten Player of the Year.
McKenney averaged 9.9 points per game and shot 39 percent from 3-point range. He showed during the NCAA Tournament he can take over in the key moments, and hit the big shots, like his national-title-icing 3-pointer.
When taling about McKenney, May said he has "no ceiling."
Another player who could and should take a huge step forward under May this season is former Cincinnati big man Moustapha Thiam. May specializes in getting the most out of talented players. There were a few in the portal with the talent of Thiam, who could be a lottery pick, if everything goes right, but not many have his upside.
Those two players and Elliot Cadeau, along with J.P. Estrella, and five-star Brandon McCoy, along with others such as Quinn Costello, should give Michigan a strong core group.
It remains to be seen if the Wolverines are going to add any other players to the 2026-27 roster, but if another piece is needed. Hamad Mousa of Cal Poly makes sense. He scored 20 points per game to lead the Big West last season, and could provide a much-needed scoring boost off the bench.
Yet, even if Michigan doesn't make a move, May sees this team as capable of winning it all again. When you have the backcourt of Cadeau and McKenney, it's easy to see why. The rest of the team is better than most realize, though, especially if you listen to May.
