4 reasons why Michigan Basketball can repeat as national champions

It's not that far-fetched to believe that Michigan can repeat in its home state next April.

One week has passed since Michigan Basketball conquered the ultimate prize and memories remain in the forefront of our basketball minds. Gazing ahead to next year and zeroing in on the effort to repeat is realistic, but it won't be an easy task by any means. Beyond that notion, there is reason to think that they can do it again. These are four reasons why I believe they can.

They'll have the best returning backcourt in the nation

Most Outstanding Player of the Final Four, Elliot Cadeau and Trey McKenney should be even better than Nimari Burnett and Cadeau were during this National Championship run. L.J. Cason would be the best backup in the country if he didn't have to redshirt, but Michigan will have more options to fill his role next season. Guard play is essential in March, and landing someone like Juke Harris would be like getting another year from Yaxel Lendeborg. He's got Big Ten player of the year potential.

In the frontcourt, bringing back Morez Johnson Jr. would only amplify the chances of repeating. J.P Estrella has recognized what Dusty May has done with his bigs in two seasons in Ann Arbor and wants to become May's next guaranteed first round lock.

They bring in a consensus top five recruiting class

Brandon McCoy and Quinn Costello should push for significant minutes in the rotation immediately. Lincoln Cosby is coming to Ann Arbor after tearing his ACL, so he could be in store to redshirt. Joseph Hartman can really light it up from deep and may be similar to what Winters Grady was supposed to be, had he stuck around.

In the two previous recruiting cycles Dusty May has hit on most of his recruits and transfers. Sites like On3, 247sports and ESPN did not rate them in their top 25 rankings, proving that they underestimated the impact that they had on the sport.

Some experts are already ranking Michigan No. 1 entering next season

With a core nucleus in place to return, it's obvious to see why Michigan is being so highly thought of. Yahoo, ESPN, CBS, and other outlets have Michigan atop their way-too-early top 25 rankings for 2027. If the Wolverines are not No. 1, then they are in the top five. They can become the first team to repeat since UConn did it earlier this decade.

They have the best coach in the sport

Dusty May has aced the transfer portal and NIL aspect of the college basketball world. He's already in the discussion as Michigan's greatest coach of all-time, and he's just scratching the surface. He took in players who were regarded as busts at their previous schools and turned them into one of college basketball's most dominant teams ever. We may be looking at the next Mike Krzyzewski or dare I say John Wooden.

May just beat Dan Hurley, he's won as many national titles as Tom Izzo and is creeping up quickly on guys like John Calipari, Bill Self and Rick Pitino. His threshold for success is limitless.
