You aren't going to win every recruiting battle. Michigan football head coach Kyle Whittingham is no different.
Whittingham has put together a stellar 2027 class with the Wolverines. It's ranked in the top 15 overall of the 247 Sports composite rankings, thanks to a total of 15 blue-chip commitments.
As strong as the 2027 class is for the Wolverines, the focus is starting to shift to 2028. Some recruits in that class have already made their decisions. Others are making them now, including four-star quarterback Lukas Prock, who recently had Michigan football in his top five.
Prock talked about how the Wolverines were one of the teams recruiting him the hardest. It's easy to understand why a quarterback would want to play for Indiana, though. Curt Cignetti has established himself as a quarterback guru, and he landed Prock's commitment on Thursday.
Michigan will have to shift QB board after 2028 miss
Jason Beck, Michigan's offensive coordinator, is starting to gain a reputation for that, too. Developing Bryce Underwood into an effective quarterback this season will put another feather in his cap. That could help with future recruiting battles. For now, the Wolverines will shift their focus to other targets, especially as in-state quarterback Donald Tabron is already trending to Texas A&M.
The 6-foot-2, 195-pound quarterback out of Princeton, New Jersey, had 41 touchdown passes and over 4,000 yards last season. That would have fit well with the Wolverines, although a more dual-threat option like Kamden Lopati could be better.
Lopati, a 6-foot-2, 225-pound quarterback is ranked as the top quarterback by ESPN, but his ranking is a little mixed. 247 Sports has him rated as a three-star prospect.
Prock had 154 rushing yards last season, so as talented as he is, there could be better fits.
One of those is Texas four-star quarterback Carter Zingelmann. He's 6-foot-5, 227 pounds. He threw for over 1,800 yards last season, while rushing for over 700. Michigan offered back in the spring. The Wolverines might be looking to turn up the heat.
Kaden Craft is another 2028 quarterback to know. Craft is 6-foot-4, 210 pounds out of Mooresville, North Carolina. He's ranked No. 107 overall, according to the 247 Sports composite rankings, and was offered back in May. Zingelmann got his offer back in March.
It will be interesting to see if Michigan shifts its focus to either of those quarterbacks. Tabon hasn't committed yet. Maybe the Wolverines can still become a serious contender there.
Regardless, Prock is off the board and the Wolverines will need to act accordingly.
