Michigan losing veteran OT to the portal will hurt depth and nothing more

Lawrence Hattar is heading to the portal after just one year in Ann Arbor, but Michigan's offensive line will be fine without him.

Michigan has suffered some significant transfer portal losses in the unexpected transition from Sherrone Moore to Kyle Whittingham, including a few along the offensive line. However, Wolverines’ fans shouldn’t lose sleep over the latest transfer portal OL departure.

Ferris State’s 2024 DII National Championship team reshaped FBS football in 2025, but Michigan transfer Lawrence Hattar didn’t quite match the impact that Trinidad Chambliss made at Ole Miss. Hattar appeared in two games through his lone season in Ann Arbor, and now he’s entering the portal as a grad transfer with one season of eligibility remaining.

Lawrence Hattar heads to the portal after 1 year at Michigan

Hattar was a depth piece for Sherrone Moore’s offensive line in 2025, but the 6-foot-5, 335-pounder played just 19 offensive snaps, three at right guard in a Week 2 loss to Oklahoma, and 16 in a Week 3 win over Central Michigan. He wasn’t expected to be a fixture on Kyle Whittingham’s roster, so while Michigan’s O-line is a bit thinner today, Whittingham should be able to replace him.

While Hattar’s loss is manageable, Michigan has suffered bigger losses along the offensive line in college football’s lone Transfer Portal window. The most notable is 2025 four-star offensive tackle Ty Haywood, who is heading to Alabama after redshirting in 2025. Haywood played just 15 snaps in three games as a true freshman, but was the No. 39 overall recruit in the country and the No. 6 offensive tackle.

Haywood isn’t the only offensive lineman heading to Tuscaloosa, either. Kaden Strayhorn, another 2025 true freshman, is also joining the Crimson Tide. Connor Jones, Ben Roebuck, and Hattar are the other outgoing O-line transfers. Those losses would be more disastrous had Whittingham not managed to get two starters from last year’s group to withdraw their names from the portal.

Starting right guard Jake Guarnera and starting right tackle Andrew Sprague are both returning to Ann Arbor for the start of the Whittingham era, and both played over 600 snaps in 2025, so maybe Michigan’s depth, at least on the right side of the line, will never get tested.
