It's been a busy day for Michigan football, not just because two more Wolverines were drafted on the third day of the NFL draft (Myles Hinton and Kalel Mullings) but also because Michigan landed a pair of 2026 commitments on Saturday.
The first was from four-star quarterback Brady Smigiel. The 6-foot-5 quarterback from California was on the radar last summer for the Michigan Wolverines before they got the commitment of Brady Hart.
Hart ended up de-committing after Bryce Underwood flipped from LSU. Smigiel was committed to Florida State but decommitted and is now a Michigan football commitment. He's ranked 74th overall in the 2026 class according to the 247 Sports composite rankings.
That wasn't the only Michigan football recruiting news of the day, though, as the Wolverines landed a commitment from three-star EDGE Tariq Boney, also in the 2026 class.
Boney is a 6-foot-2, 230-pound three-star recruit from Washington, D.C. He's ranked 1,007th overall in the 2026 class according to the 247 Sports composite rankings. He is also ranked 81st among EDGE players.
Michigan football fans won't love the rankings. However, before there is too much hang-wringing, Boney has also been offered by Georgia, Washington, Texas A&M, Washington, Penn State, Pitt, Syracuse, Tennessee, Maryland, West Virginia, and others.
Boney has a similar build to Josaiah Stewart. That's a comparison he made in an interview with The Michigan Insider. Regardless of the rankings, Michigan is elite at developing EDGE prospects. Stewart is just the latest draft pick (third round) at the position.
The Wolverines have five commitments total the 2026 class. Smigiel's ended a two-month drought (February 28th). Three of the five commitments are ranked as four-star prospects according to the 247 Sports compoiste rankings.
Momentum is tangible, especially on the recruiting trail. The Wolverines have it. Hopefully, they can capitalize on it.
