Michigan Football earned a huge win on the recruiting trail on Saturday with the commitment of top 100 quarterback Brady Smigiel. Smigiel's commitment ends a two-month commitment drought for the Wolverines, and will look to ignite some momentum for Michigan football on the recruiting trail.

Smigiel is a guy who's been on Michigan's radar for a long time. Going back to before Bryce Underwood committed to Michigan, Smigiel was one of the top two quarterbacks Michigan was recruiting for 2026. The other was Brady Hart, who committed to Michigan before reclassifying and signing with Texas A&M. Smigiel committed to Florida State soon after Hart's decision but reopened his recruitment this winter, which allowed the Wolverines to get involved once again.

What Michigan football is getting in Brady Smigiel

At 6'5, Smigiel is a high-floor pocket passer who has dominated the high school ranks in California. This is a guy who can be a very competent backup for Bryce Underwood for a few years, and then be a tremendous leader and field general.

What's really exciting about Smigiel's commitment is that it shows a shift in ideology. The last time Michigan landed a five-star quarterback (JJ McCarthy), they took their foot off the gas when it came to recruiting quarterbacks in the following cycles. They ended up with a few developmental projects that didn't pan out, and last season was the result.

It's so important to consistently have good talent at the quarterback position, and that's what Smigiel is. Getting a quarterback recruit on board is great for Michigan's 2026 class, as the Wolverines need a vocal leader to help put the class together.
