Quarterback recruiting is a little different than any other position. Michigan was in a good spot with Peter Bourque being committed, but with a new coaching staff, and a different offensive system, he decommitted.
That put the Wolverines even more behind the 8-ball. Usually, you want your quarterback committed the summer before their junior season. So for Michigan, it would be ideal to find a 2028 quarterback this summer or early fall.
Good players are still available. Michigan has been making a strong push for Illinois four-star quarterback commit Kamden Lopati. Another quarterback on the radar of the new Michigan football coaching staff, under Kyle Whittingham, is Dane Weber.
Out of California, the 6-foot, 215-pound pass is ranked No. 413 overall, according to the Rivals Industry Rankings. He's ranked as a four-star by Rivals own ranking system.
Oregon, Washington, and Michigan are some of the biggest names on the offer sheet of Weber. He was also offered by Utah. With him being from California, it's not a shock that the Wolverines are making a push. Whittingham was very familiar with that area.
Georgia jumps in the mix with offer for Dane Weber after Michigan football visit
However, the fight for Weber is far from over as the Georgia Bulldogs just entered the fray, offering him a scholarship this week.
Fresh off a multi-day visit to Ann Arbor, we will see how that impacts his recruitment. There is no doubt that Michigan improved its standing after having the three-star QB on campus earlier this week.
“We know Michigan is a great program— but to be there in person was something," Weber said via Ethan McDowell of The Wolverine.
UCLA is listed as the leader via the Rivals Recruiting Prediction Machine, but this recruitment feels wide open. Getting Weber back for an official visit is the next step, but with other targets on the board, it will be interesting to see how things develop.
Lopati will visit in early April. That could impact just how hard the Wolverines end up pushing for Weber.
