You can feel the recruiting momentum building for Michigan football under Kyle Whittingham. The Wolverines haven't landed their first commitment under the new head coach in the 2027 recruiting class, but it feels imminent.
The Wolverines have started trending for the commitment of four-star safety Darrell Mattison, who is ranked No. 409 overall, according to the 247 Sports composite rankings. 247 Sports has him ranked No. 243 overall in the 2027 class. ESPN doesn't have him ranked, which is dropping down his consensus ranking.
Michigan is making Mattison a top priority. He was on campus for a visit recently and started trending for expert projections soon after. A bunch of Rivals experts have put in projections via the Rivals Recruiting Prediction Machine for Mattison to commit to Michigan.
Brice Marich of The Michigan Insider has followed up with a crystal ball projection. Mattison, who is 6-foot-2, 160 pounds, is a dynamic playmaker. He had 47 tackles last season and five interceptions during the 2025 season, to go along with three pass breakups.
Another target projected to Michigan in 2027
Mattison isn't the only 2027 recruit who has been projected to Michigan football, though. Three-star athlete Maxwell Miles was also projected to the Wolverines by Marich. The 6-foot-2, 190-pound athlete out of Las Vegas is being recruited as a safety.
He was recently offered by the Wolverines, who have vaulted to the top of his recruitment. Minnesota and UNLV are scheduled to get official visits from Miles, who has just four Power-4 offers currently.
Whittingham and his staff have a long track record of talent evaluation, though. Just like Jim Harbaugh, he tends to be right about kids more than the rankings. Miles is ranked No. 735 overall via the 247 Sports composite rankings in the 2027 class.
The crystal ball from Marich is the only one for Miles so far.
