Michigan football fans might be dating themselves by saying that Marcus Ray is one of their favorite players, because it looks like his son might soon be a Wolverines' commitment.
Marcus Ray was an All-American defensive back for the Wolverines' 1997 national championship team. His son recently moved to the state of Michigan. Kyle Whittingham, the Michigan football head coach, made him a top priority, and that effort is paying off.
Ethan McDowell, a Michigan recruiting reporter for the Wolverine.com, has projected Marquise Ray, a three-star defensive back in the 2028 class, to commit to U-M.
The 5-foot-10, 165-pound safety is ranked No. 654 overall, according to the Rivals Industry Rankings. He transferred to Saline, Michigan recently from Pickerington, Ohio.
Michigan football has been making hay with legacy recruits since Whittingham took over. The Wolverines landed Charles Woodson Jr., a safety in the 2027 class. They offered Ray soon after that, and Asa Burch, another Michigan legacy, has been trending to the Wolverines.
Michigan has just one commitment in the 2028 class right now, from highly touted kicker Ryan Jung, but it feels like that will change soon.
Currently, Michigan has been projected to land several recruits by one or more recruiting experts. Ray is the latest. Burch is another. The highly touted EDGE just received a prediction to Michigan from Steve Wiltfong, along with others.
Burch is an EDGE. Another EDGE who doesn't happen to be a legacy recruit but is also trending to the Wolverines is Major Stokes. He's ranked 54th overall, according to the 247 Sports composite rankings.
Mataio Fano, another player the Michigan coaching staff is familiar with, was also projected to the Wolverines by multiple experts recently. He is going to visit for the Oklahoma game.
Michigan football trending for another in-state recruit
LaMarcus Army (Detroit Cass Tech), a 6-foot-1, 167-pound safety ranked No. 317 overall, according to the Rivals Industry Rankings, is also trending to Michigan, following a projection from McDowell.
The Wolverines have some elite five-star targets in the state for the 2028 class. Landing some other key targets in the state can only help their cause. Throwing the ball more this fall should help, too.
Whittingham's first recruiting class is ranked 11th right now, according to the 247 Sports team composite rankings. Michigan has 21 commitments total in 2027. 15 of them are blue-chip prospects.
There shouldn't be just one commitment for Michigan in 2028 for long, at least if the recent projections prove to be accurate.
