Michigan football has become one of the best programs in college football at developing tight ends, and the Wolverines are poised to land another blue-chip recruit at the position.
The Wolverines have hosted several blue-chip recruits in the 2026 class for unofficial visits this spring, including four-star tight end Matt Ludwig from Montana.
A 6-foot-4, 240-pound tight end from Billings, Ludwig has been a top target through the 2026 cycle so much so that the entire Michigan football offensive staff, and Sherrone Moore, traveled to Montana to see him play a basketball game.
Ludwig is ranked No. 237 overall in the 2026 class according to the 247 Sports composite rankings. He's the 13th-ranked tight end. He has also received numerous expert projections to commit to Michigan football in the past month, including two in the past week.
One of those was from Steve Lorenz of the Michigan Insider. He has one of the most trusted crystal balls for Michigan football recruiting, so that's a big deal. Lorenz projected Ludwig to U-M on March 25th.
Josh Henschke, publisher of the Maize and Blue Review for Rivals, joined Lorenz, EJ Holland of The Wolverines, and Steve Wiltfong of On3.com in projecting Ludwig to be a Michigan Wolverine.
Texas Tech appears to be one of the top contenders, and there are rumors of a massive NIL deal on the table. However, Michigan can play the NIL game, too. U-M is also about to have a tight end drafted for the third year in a row.

Colston Loveland, from Idaho, will be a first-round pick next month. Luke Schoonmaker was taken in the second round in the 2023 NFL draft, while AJ Barner was a fifth-rounder in 2024.

Notre Dame has also jumped into the mix with an offer recently. Ludwig also visited Texas A&M not long ago and has an offer from Georgia. Tennessee and the Bulldogs were among his final four, along with Michigan and Texas Tech, but if all of these projections are correct, the Wolverines are going to land another tight end with an NFL future.
